What Colour Correction Is — And Why It Needs a Consultation

Colour correction is remedial colour work: instead of adding a fresh shade to healthy hair, it removes, re-balances, or neutralises a colour result that went wrong. The Waterloo clients who book it usually arrive with one of four problems — a botched box dye that grabbed too dark or too warm, harsh banding between roots and ends, persistent brassiness after lightening, or uneven bleach that came out patchy and blotchy. Correction is the service designed specifically to unpick each of those.

What separates correction from a normal colour is that it cannot be priced or promised in advance. Your hair's response depends on everything that has ever been put on it, so a consultation is required before any correction begins. We examine your hair, discuss its full history, and run a strand test to see how it lifts. Only then can we tell you whether your goal is reachable in one session or needs a careful multi-session plan — and give you an honest price. It is the step that protects both your hair and your expectations.

What every Waterloo correction includes:

  • An in-person consultation to read your colour, undertones, and history
  • A strand & elasticity test to confirm how far your hair can safely go
  • A clear, staged plan — the number of sessions mapped out before we begin
  • Olaplex bond-building at every stage to keep hair strong
  • Personalised aftercare so your corrected colour holds at home

How Our Correction Process Works

A tested method, not a gamble — consultation, strand test, staged plan

1

Complimentary Consultation

Everything starts here. We assess your current level and undertones, walk through your colour history in detail, and listen to what you actually want. You'll get a straight answer on what's achievable — and if a look isn't safely reachable yet, we'll tell you why and what the path there looks like.

2

Strand Test

We test a discreet section for elasticity and porosity and watch how it lifts. This is what turns a hopeful guess into a reliable plan: it tells us your hair's real strength, the right products, and whether the correction is a one-session fix or a staged project.

3

Your Multi-Session Plan

Big changes — black box dye removal, dark-to-blonde, heavy banding — are staged across appointments a few weeks apart. Each visit does a measured amount of lifting and toning while bond treatments rebuild strength in between. Straightforward corrections wrap up in one visit; your plan is agreed with you before we start.

4

Toning, Repair & Reveal

We finish with a custom toner dialled to your target shade, a deep-conditioning and protein treatment to restore softness, then a blow-dry so you see the full result. You leave with written aftercare and the exact products to keep it looking right.

The Corrections Waterloo Clients Bring Us Most

See your hair below? You're in the right place.

📦

Botched Box Dye

Grabbed darker, warmer, or more uneven than the box promised. We lift it back toward your goal gradually, protecting condition the whole way.

🟠

Brassiness That Won't Quit

Orange and yellow warmth surfacing after lightening or a faded toner. A custom toner neutralises it for a clean, intentional result.

📏

Banding & Colour Lines

Visible stripes from overlapping colour or grown-out regrowth. We re-level the sections so the colour blends seamlessly top to bottom.

🩹

Blotchy or Uneven Bleach

Hot roots, patchy lightening, or spotty bleach from a rushed job. We even the lift and tone for a consistent, wearable finish.

Black Box Dye Removal

The hardest correction there is. Layered black pigment lifts slowly and needs multiple bond-protected sessions to reach lighter safely.

🌫️

Muddy, Faded Colour

Old fashion shades or over-layered colour that has gone dull and flat. We strip back the buildup and reset to a fresh, clean tone.

L'Oréal Institute Trained

Formal colour training backed by more than a decade behind the chair.

Colour Correction Specialist

Advanced colour chemistry is a core focus, not an occasional add-on.

Honest, Health-First

If a correction isn't safe, we tell you — and give you a real path forward.

Waterloo Colour Correction FAQ

The questions we hear most, answered honestly

Is my box-dye disaster fixable, or is it too far gone?

The vast majority of box-dye situations we see in Waterloo are fixable — the real question is how many sessions it takes and whether your hair is strong enough to get there. We answer both at your consultation with a strand test. If your hair is genuinely too fragile to correct right now, we say so and start with repair rather than risk a break. Honesty up front is how we keep your hair on your head.

Why does colour correction cost more than a regular colour in Waterloo?

A regular colour applies one predictable result. Correction has to remove or rework existing pigment first, which means more product, more time, more monitoring, and often bond treatments to protect your hair. Waterloo corrections generally run $200 to $500 per session, and multi-session transformations add up across visits. You are paying for skill and safety, not just chair time — and you get a firm quote after your consultation.

How many sessions will my correction take?

It depends entirely on where your hair is starting from and where you want it to go. A brassiness or toner fix is usually one session. Lifting dark box dye, removing black, or going from dark to blonde is almost always staged over two or more sessions spaced a few weeks apart, so your hair can recover between rounds. Your strand test lets us map out the number of sessions before you commit.

Can you fix banding and harsh regrowth lines?

Yes. Banding — those visible stripes where roots, mid-lengths, and ends sit at different levels — is one of the most satisfying corrections to fix. It usually comes from repeated at-home colouring or overlapping applications. We re-balance the levels so the colour reads as one continuous, blended tone from root to tip instead of a set of lines.

Is colour correction safe if my hair is already damaged?

It can be, with the right approach. We assess elasticity and porosity before starting, and if your hair is compromised we take a gentler, more conservative route — smaller lifts, more bond-building with Olaplex, and more time between sessions. If the damage is severe, we will pause the colour work and rebuild strength with treatments first. We never trade your hair's health for a faster result.

Where is colour correction done — in the salon or in my home?

Colour correction is done only in our Waterloo salon at 102–255 Woolwich Street. Lifting and toning colour safely needs proper rinse stations, controlled conditions, and room to monitor your hair through what can be a multi-hour or multi-session process, so it is not a service we offer in-home. We do bring mobile styling and makeup to homes across Waterloo for weddings and events, but the colour work itself stays in the salon.

Do I need a consultation before my colour correction?

Always. No reputable stylist can quote or promise a correction from a text message or a photo — hair colour behaves according to its history, and we have to see and test it in person. Your consultation is complimentary, runs about 20 minutes, and ends with a clear plan, a realistic timeline, and a price. Book online or call (226) 210-4099 to get started.

How do I keep my corrected colour looking good afterwards?

Corrected colour lasts longest with sulphate-free, colour-safe products, cooler water when you wash, and regular deep conditioning to replace moisture. If we toned out brassiness, a purple or blue toning shampoo keeps warmth from creeping back. We send you home with a tailored aftercare routine and product recommendations for your exact result, plus a schedule for any maintenance toning.
